Off the Shoulder

Maria had come across some photos of her Aunt when she was about the same age. This inspired her to get some photos of herself – to capture the beauty that is perceivable in youth. The beautiful natural light of the Catholic Church in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua and the playful setting at the Pelican Eyes Resort provided for a fun photo shoot.

Barefoot and Pregnant... in the Kitchen

Magdalena and her husband Paul were of course very excited for the coming arrival of their daughter Vivienne. The most magical part of this shoot was that Magdalena is my financé’s daughter and I was to soon be honored as Granny Blue.
We were visiting them in Los Angeles at the heat of the summer so needless to say the shoot with indoors. I particularly loved including their current family members – two French Bulldogs named Cuba and Stella. Magdalena is one of the most ‘ready’ moms I have ever known… and don’t doubt for a moment that she will be a beautiful mother to little Vivienne.

Have you Googled your Name Lately?

I had a little giggle this morning as I was procrastinating and deciding which project to take on next. What did I do? Googled my name. (Funny how that is now a verb:) On the first page I found a contest that I had entered and won over 7 years ago!! Guess I’ve been doing this longer than I thought.

The Photo Contest: Glass

We chose “Vancouver in a Glass” by Heather van Doorninck as the Grand Prize winner. There were also several entries using this idea, but this by far was the best execution of it. The position of the glass, as well as the lighting make it a pleasing element within the composition. While many other entries captured the upside-down reflection of the background in the glass, none were sharp or clear as this one. Also her placement of the glass on a wooden surface and the grass as well gives the image a foundation. And then there is the beautifully lit city in the background, thrown out of focus so that it doesn’t become part of the figure or subject, but sharp enough so that we clearly see the relationship of it to the image in the glass.

It may very well have been the most expensive dress she will ever own and the most gorgeous too! But she was willing to get in the saddle, get soaked, salty and dirty for her Trash the Dress photo shoot. Adriana returned to Nicaragua, her homeland, to get married in a big celebration with family and friends. Her and her husband Nathan brought with them a photographer from the US to photograph their wedding but I was honored to be invited to join in as the 2nd for the shoot. It all started out with a call to us at Rancho Chilamate looking to take horses to the beach for photos… we could do that!! The session ended with this beautiful dress ‘gifted’ to me so that I can bring it back to life and find a wonderful new owner to wear for her wedding. What a fun … and romantic day!

PreWedding Pirate Party – Love it!

Pirate and his Wench... in Love

One of my favorite ways to get to know a bride and groom is to take some photos of them before the wedding day. With a destination wedding it is usually a little more difficult given that they are not in town for very long but Dave and Kristy provided the perfect photo ops with a beach party during the day and a themed rehearsal dinner on the beach at the Bambu Beach Club Restaurant in the evening. The Pirate theme was perfect and they embraced it with gusto!

Jux in the Stairwell

Embracing age gracefully is a beautiful thing to capture in photos. Rachel was about to turn 40 years old and honored me with a request to do a shoot. Rachel and her husband Lee are currently building an exciting new home in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua using recycled shipping containers. Steel walls, empty rooms, concrete stairwells and rubber tire retaining walls made for an ideal ‘industrial’ photo theme. Her timeless beauty and 5o’s style worked well with the edgy, cool feel of their home ‘under construction’.

Samantha and Mom Photoshoot

Julie and her 7 year old daughter were on vacation in Nicaragua visiting her folks who own a villa at Pelican Eyes. Little Samantha was too young for us to take on a riding adventure at Rancho Chilamate so she opted for a photography adventure instead. It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon with perfect lighting and a lot of fun.

I was honored to be able to capture this time with the two of them. A little girl is only 7 years old for a very short period of time in her life.
